Project Progress Report
Discussion revolved around the current status of the website update. As there has been little progress made, it was decided to take a fresh look at the project and make some changes. It was acknowledged that there are a number of difficulties the members may be encountering, the main one being time and balancing with all our other commitments. It was decided that we needed to regroup, refocus and narrow the project goals to make it more manageable with a greater chance of being successful.
Structure Change to Meetings
As most members set aside the time to attend the meetings, it was thought that shifting to allow time to work on a task during meeting time may be beneficial. In this scenario, the first part of the meeting would have Robert giving a demo on a particular topic and then members would work together on that particular topic or task during the second part. This would allow everyone to see what is being done on a task and allows for more input and the ability to help each other understand each step if needed.
Realizing that not all members are at the same level in their web development journey, it was decided to start with small tasks and either learn or refresh the basics. So for the first meeting in the next session Robert proposes to give a basic overview of a WordPress set-up as that is what our site is built with. Another upcoming topic would be getting members more comfortable using Notion, especially the Kanban boards. It was also decided that to make setting up the new site as simple and as basic as possible we will write the code to build our own theme and not use a pre-made WP theme template. A child theme will then not be necessary. This will help members build on their coding skill and as no outsiders’ code will be involved make it easier to see and understand the sites’ code structure and make any necessary changes in the future.
Looking further out, future topics will address working in a team environment and as part of a coding team, since that is an area that many may not have much experience with and is important when working in a professional environment. These topics would cover subjects such as using Agile Project Management, Git and Github.
It is hoped that these changes will help members become more confident in working on the project as we start with the basics and take time in completing each step, ending up with a website each and everyone can take pride in.
